Still Having Car Troubles
One of the many classic running gags that this new series preserves is Archie’s beat up clunker of a car! I think it has been a nearly timeless way for teenage boys to identify with Archie – he has car problems just like they probably do in real life. Except… is that really true anymore? I may be way off base here, but I don’t know of any boys who have really terrible cars – well… except my oldest son! It seems that many kids nowadays have nicer cars than I do, and keep them looking pristine. Also, how is it that Betty is still so mechanically good? I don’t know any teenagers who can fix a car’s engine these days. It would be nice though, wouldn’t it, to have a cute girl next door to take care of your car problems? Ah, we can all dream I guess.
Synopsis:
The
first issue of this series
had Archie lamenting the loss of his long time girlfriend, Betty. In this issue Archie continues his second person tour of Riverdale and his life. First we learn a bit about how Jughead used to be rich, then we see how Archie has had trouble holding down any job – mostly because he is so clumsy. Anyway, while Betty’s friends throw her a birthday party, Archie and his pals apply for construction jobs at the new Lodge Manor. And even though they make a valiant effort to protect Arch from himself, he still causes mayhem and ends up getting fired. But not before he sees the beautiful Veronica – and promptly falls head-over-heels in love with her! Betty, meanwhile, still has feelings for Archie – as evidenced by her birthday wish and goofy-in-love face when she sees him next door. Aww, how sweet!
How I Rate This Issue:
-
Story:
– The many little glimpses of the characters’ lives made this story deeper than it appeared to be. Jughead’s surprising past, Archie’s clumsiness problem and Betty’s feelings were all very interesting and fun to read about.
-
Art:
– Once again the art was mostly beautiful and fun to look at. There were a few weird panels, though.
-
Fun Factor:
– I am a big fan of Archie comics, so I couldn’t help but like this issue! The good writing and cool art helped make it a blast to read – all while staying true to the classic Archie characters and story lines.
