Still Serving Terrible Lunches

Another long-running gag in Archie comics has been the lunch lady, Ms. Beazley, and the terrible food she produces. I was delighted to see her make an appearance in this issue – and she even looks like the classical character… in a new sort of way. Here she serves up Veronica’s first lunch at Riverdale, and that sets the stage for a great, pivotal scene to follow! I wasn’t disappointed – and I doubt you will be either!

Synopsis:

In issue #2 of this series, Archie got his first glimpse of Veronica – and it really wowed him! In this issue he gets to know her better and, sadly, is still goofy for her. It all begins when Archie meets her as she arrives for her first day at Riverdale High School. He offers to show her around, but she sees him as more of a servant. As usual for Archie, he is oblivious as to what is really going on – but his best pal Jughead isn’t! Jug tries to talk some sense into Arch, but he won’t have any of it. (A funny scene occurs during a dodge-ball game where Jug is a master ball evader and Archie is doing pretty well – at least until he sees Veronica!) Jughead even tries to recruit Betty, but she wants no part of it. However, when Betty is trying to be nice and is consequently spurned by Veronica, then she decides to help Jug out and rescue Archie from his own stupidity. Aah – watch out Riverdale High!

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 4 stars – This story was lots of fun to read. Being divided into 4 chapters was very convenient, and I liked seeing how the first impressions of Veronica affected many different types of people – especially the “non-core gang” students at the high school. However, it was a little bit stereo-typical with the spoiled rich girl shtick.
  • Art: 5 stars – The art was beautiful and fun to behold! Fiona Staples is a great artist, and can draw some beautiful people, but the facial expressions she draws are just over the moon! Wow! Nice, thick inks and great use of colors rounded out this visual treat!
